Southgate should have won at least one trophy by now with the players he has had available
We will win nothing this time

Not a single positive for England tonight. Woeful. Mainoo miles off the standard required on that showing. Foden looks like Phil Foden?s lesser talented twin brother. What happens to him in an England shirt? Hopefully Southgate gets the United job before next weekend.

Town have faced this kind of defence all season. The difference is we move the ball left to right and back again so the defence is pulled all over the place. England have been just too slow and indecisive in their play all night.

I?ll simplify it for you. Cook is a better manager than Southgate. The FAs safe pair of hands.

It's about time we arranged friendleys against San Marino, Gibralter, Andorra etc. we might stand a chance of at least getting a draw.

Southgate has been criticised in the past for sticking with the old names, he picks some fresh exciting talent and he's criticised....guy cant win.

For me i'm ok with Grealish not making it as i'm not sure he's been that great this season....3 goals and 1 assist all season in that City side isnt a great return and there is a lot of competition for that sort of position in the team now.

I have no issue with Southgate selecting 'fresh exiting talent' as you call them, I would rather use the term "young untried" hopefuls? But they should not have been thrown together at the last minute as in this case. I have just Just watched tonight's game and the team look total disjointed like they have never played together, which to be honest most of them haven't. After tonight's performance I don't hold too much hope for England's chances. I just hope they prove me wrong!

Alright a cap performance I?m sure it?ll will be much better first game, my main concern is the defence, centre backs a real worry.

england will not win the euros, tonight proved that beyond any doubt, southgate has done well but just lacks the true winning mentality that is required to... well win something. has to find a place in his side for trent, a talking point player but for me he wants the ball, has an authority to his play and makes things happen but the fact that he is squad player to southgate tells you all you need to know.

Another example of England complicating the simple game of football.

Agree with an earlier poster that the England players, with the honourable exception of Gordon, looked more concerned about avoiding injury than winning the game. Walker was possibly the worst example - for the whole of his time on the pitch he looked as if his team were winning 3-0 instead of struggling to get into the game. However, once the inevitable moaning, wailing and gnashing of teeth is done, the England team will do very well when the competition actually starts. The most irritating thing for me is the insufferable attitude of entitlement that many supporters have - expecting England to win the tournament because they have some very good players. Those people seem oblivious to the fact that there are other strong teams in the competition, and they also have very good players. That expectation of victory also ignores the fact that any football match can be decided by a stroke of luck going one way or the other, such as a deflection, a bounce off the post, or a poor refereeing decision either way. England have a very strong squad and an excellent manager, and as much chance as any other team of emerging from the tournament as champions.

For what it?s worth the starting 11 from the first game hasn?t featured together at any point tonight. Pickford, Bellingham, Saka will all start and possibly a couple of others.

Tonight has very little bearing on things starting next week other than giving folk a chance to have a whine as we were crap.

And hasn't done if for months for Man City let alone England. Pep can't be wrong as well can he?

Entirely predictable: last game before a major tournament against an opposition known for not rolling over, boos ringing out.

Which at 14-1 made Iceland too good to miss!

Tempo.

The way to break down deep sitting sides is tempo.

Sharp inter-passing and movement.

Witnessed as much on numerous occasions in the National League last season.

It's all about getting through the group, then the competition will open out when sides actually play to win...

I'm not Southgate fan, but he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't, for yrs folk ( probs even some of those moaning on here) have been calling for the england squad to be in form players rather than the tried and trusted favourites from tournaments passed, so when he does pick the inform players, he gets pelters again.
Eze looks a great player, very direct, as does Gordon, guehi had a steady game, and they played the ball well, we came up against these tactics ourselves many times over the last 6yrs, and we didn't always break them down either, the result was irrelevant as was the game, the real thing starts next Sunday ( for us) and then we'll have a real idea how things are gunna go...

Top tip jude Bellingham player of the tournament. 👍
