Jim Brown.
A true hero in every sense of the word. What a goalkeeper and what a human being.
As for centre back pairings purely from a town point of view what about John Ridley and Bill Green?
Absolutely loved watching those two together.

You're right AC, they were probably the best centre back pairing we've had at town, and you're spot on with your views on Jim Brown mate. There wouldn't be a club to support if it wasn't for him. He should have something named after him, at both Sheffield Road and Bramall Lane.

Nice to hear that Alan Hansen has been discharged from hospital and is now recovering at home.

I read Graeme Souness? column in last weeks Mail and he said , you can throw any name you want at me?.I assume he meant Beckenbauer..but Hansen was simply the best ball playing centre half he?d ever seen. Obviously being Scottish
Curtailed his national honours but at club level he?s one of the most decorated players ever

Yes, Hansen was a Rolls Royce of a centre back in days when most were hatchet men. He had to replace another club legend in Ron Yeats, so I've no doubt the fans would have been sceptical until he showed what he was about. I have to agree with Souness, he's out on his own as an all in central defender.

He was way after Ron Yeats. Just checked it was only 6 years, but he didn?t replace him directly.

I'm surprised at that, but I remember Ron Yeats being on my Typhoo Tea Liverpool FC team photo but I can't remember the year that was. I know he didn't replace Tommy Smith so I'll be scratching my head now as I'd rather do that than Google it 😁.

Weren't Phil Thompson and Emlyn Hughes in that position between Yates finishing & Hansen starting?

And Tommy Smith, or was he a full back?

I'll say this much, whenever and wherever he played the player opposite him knew he'd been in a game.
